Pelvic floor condition

Postpartum Recovery

Recovery isn’t about bouncing back. It’s about rising forward.

Your body has done something extraordinary. Postpartum pelvic floor PT helps you rebuild strength, restore function, and reconnect with your body — safely, intentionally, and at your own pace.

“This is not about rushing to your pre-pregnancy body. It’s about listening to your body and honouring what it has accomplished.”

What happens after birth

Your body has done something extraordinary.

The postpartum period is a time of incredible change, adjustment, and growth — both for your baby and for your own body. After carrying and delivering a child, your body has undergone major physical, hormonal, and emotional shifts. While many people focus on newborn care during this time, it’s equally important to focus on your own recovery.

From a pelvic floor physical therapy perspective, postpartum recovery is not just about “bouncing back.” It’s about rebuilding strength, restoring function, preventing complications, and reconnecting with your body in a safe, intentional way.

Vaginal delivery
Can stretch or tear muscles and connective tissues in the pelvic floor. Many people notice weakness, urinary changes, pelvic pain, or discomfort with intimacy in the weeks and months that follow.
Caesarean delivery
Affects the abdominal wall and creates scar tissue that can tether the bladder, restrict uterine movement, and impact core and pelvic stability for years afterward.

Common postpartum challenges

What you might be experiencing.

Signs pelvic floor PT can help

  • Urinary or bowel incontinence
  • Pelvic organ prolapse or pressure
  • Pain with intercourse or touch
  • Diastasis recti or core weakness
  • Tailbone or pelvic pain
  • Low back or hip pain
  • Difficulty lifting, bending, or performing daily tasks

Even if symptoms seem mild, early intervention can prevent long-term complications and support a smoother recovery. And it’s never too late — we see patients six weeks postpartum and six years postpartum. Your recovery is valid at any stage.

What treatment includes

Rebuilding with intention and care.

1
Comprehensive assessment
A thorough evaluation of pelvic floor muscle function, core strength, posture, mobility, scar tissue, and alignment. Internal assessment is offered only if you’re comfortable — never required.
2
Pelvic floor muscle training
Safe, effective techniques to strengthen, relax, and coordinate the pelvic floor — including Kegel exercises, relaxation strategies, and functional movement training.
3
Core & abdominal rehabilitation
Addressing diastasis recti and restoring core function with gentle, progressive exercises that reconnect the core with the pelvic floor.
4
Scar & C-section care
Gentle scar mobilisation, mobility work, and abdominal strengthening to restore function and reduce discomfort after caesarean delivery.
5
Education & functional strategies
Safe lifting, carrying, and movement strategies for daily tasks and newborn care. Posture, body mechanics, and breathing techniques that reduce strain and support recovery.

A note on emotional wellbeing

Recovery is not just physical

“Physical recovery is closely tied to emotional wellbeing.”

Many individuals experience stress, anxiety, or frustration during postpartum recovery. Pain, functional limitations, and body changes can contribute to emotional strain. Pelvic floor physical therapy supports not only physical healing but also confidence, body awareness, and a sense of control over your recovery.

Postpartum recovery is not about rushing to your pre-pregnancy body. It’s about listening to your body, rebuilding strength, restoring function, and creating balance. Your body has done an extraordinary thing — it deserves to be honoured.
